How much does it cost to have a birth with Birth Roots midwives, without using my insurance benefits?

We offer several different prepayment packages ("cash pay" prices): the Standard Birth Center Package, the Deluxe Add-on Package, and the Home Birth Package. These packages are discounted because they are paid before the birth.  You may be able to use a flex spending account or medical savings account to pay for these services.

The Standard Birth Center Package:

The Standard Birth Center Package is a discounted bundle of services, which includes: the midwives’ services for prenatal appointments, attendance at the labor and birth, and all postpartum visits in the first six - eight weeks after birth; the use of the birth center facility in labor as well as the tub for labor and/or birth; and basic lab fees. The Standard Birth Center Package does not include ultrasounds, medications such as antibiotics or Rhogam, or non-routine labwork.

The Standard Birth Center Package fee is $2,000 if paid in full prior to 28 weeks of pregnancy, or $2,800 if paid in full after 28 weeks of pregnancy. Payment in full is due by 33 weeks of pregnancy, or at the first appointment if after 33 weeks.

The Home Birth Package:

The Home Birth Package includes the midwives’ services for prenatal appointments, attendance at the labor and birth, and all postpartum visits in the first six - eight weeks after birth, and basic lab fees. The Home Birth Package does not include ultrasounds, medications such as antibiotics or Rhogam, or non-routine labwork. 


We offer a prepayment discount and financial hardship discount, with a sliding fee scale based on combined family income and family size. The total fee for the Home Birth Package ranges from $1,700-$4,700. Please schedule a consultation to discuss fees in person.

The Deluxe Add-on Package:

Families choosing to birth with Birth Roots can choose to add additional services to their care. The Deluxe Add-on Package can be added to the Standard Birth Center Package or the Home Birth Package. The Deluxe Add-on package is also an option for families who are using their insurance benefits. We do not bill insurance for any of the services included in the Deluxe Add-on package, but you may be able to use a flex spending account or medical savings account for this portion of your care.

The Deluxe Add-On Package includes:
60 minute long prenatal visits throughout your pregnancy (typical return prenatal visits are 20-30 minutes.)
One 1 hour long prenatal massage session with a licensed massage therapist.
Series of childbirth preparation classes at Birth Roots.
Services of a Birth Roots doula or birth photographer.
One prenatal home visit with the Birth Roots midwives.
Optional belly casting session during the prenatal home visit (we will leave the cast to dry at your home, and you can decorate it as you please).

The Deluxe Add-On Package Fee (due in full by 33 weeks) is $2200.
 

How much does it cost to have a birth with Birth Roots, using my insurance benefits?

Some insurance companies reimburse for the care provided by a Licensed Midwife, and some insurance companies do not. Payment for all services is required at the time of service by cash, check, or through Paypal. If you are considering using our services, we are happy to verify your benefits with your insurance company to find out what your estimated reimbursement would be. We are considered out of network providers by PPO plans. We are not contracted with any HMO plans, or with Medi-Cal, Tricare, or AIM.  

Please do not hesistate to contact us so that we can verify your benefits and estimate your costs for giving birth with Birth Roots.  Often, an out-of-hospital birth is no more expensive than a hospital birth, even if the hospital and physician are contracted with the hospital.

Yes! We accept cash or check or you can pay online with a credit card using Paypal. If using your credit card to pay for our services you will be charged an additional 3% service fee.

How much do labwork, ultrasounds, and supplies cost?

All standard prenatal labwork, ultrasounds, and medications are available to you but not all are required in order to have your baby with Birth Roots.  Some basic labwork is required for birth at the birth center. 
Your insurance may or may not cover labwork and ultrasounds. Basic prenatal labwork is included in your Global Fee, if it is not covered by your insurance.
The MSAFP genetic screening for mom and the Newborn Screening for baby may or may not be covered by insurance and will be paid directly to the state of California. We will help you determine if your insurance will pay for these tests. Some women choose to have them done with another provider so that they are covered by insurance.
Medicines for mom may include Rhogam if she is Rh negative or antibiotics in labor if she is GBS positive.  The newborn medications vitamin k and erythromycin eye ointment are included in the fee if not covered by insurance.  We do not provide hepatitis B vaccination for the newborn.  Your pediatrician can provide this vaccination.
For a home birth, you will need to collect some additional supplies, including a Birth Kit which costs around $50, and household and baby care items such as towels, baby blankets, trash bags, etc.
If you would like to have a tub available for labor and/or birth at home, you can use your own bath tub, or purchase or rent a tub. Inflatable tubs range from $40-$100, or an excellent one can be rented from us for $80, with a personal disposable liner for hygiene. You can also rent hard plastic tubs from many sources online. You will need to collect supplies such as a new hose, faucet adaptor, fish net/scoop, and shower curtain liners or tarps.

Use of a birth tub is included in the Facility Fee for women giving birth at the birth center.
